INSTALLING LOYALISTS

The difference between a political appointee and a loyalist is the difference between policy alignment and personal servitude. Political appointees have always been chosen partly for ideological compatibility — that is normal. What makes the current appointments unprecedented is the selection criterion: not competence, not experience, not expertise, but personal devotion to Donald Trump.

The pattern is consistent across every power center. The new FBI Director has no FBI experience but published an enemies list of people to investigate on Trump's behalf. The new Defense Secretary is a television host with no Pentagon experience. The new DNI amplified Russian propaganda and suppressed intelligence about Jared Kushner's foreign influence. The new HHS Secretary is an anti-vaccine activist who fired all 17 members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. In each case, the qualifying credential is not what they know — it is whom they serve.

The FBI and Department of Justice hold the most consequential power in domestic governance: the power to investigate, charge, and prosecute anyone in the country, including the president's political enemies. For precisely this reason, the independence of these institutions from presidential control has been a bedrock principle since Watergate. Trump has shattered that principle by installing his personal defense attorney as Deputy Attorney General and a self-described avenger as FBI Director.

Attorney General Pam Bondi never charged Jeffrey Epstein despite being Florida's top prosecutor — he was arrested by federal prosecutors just six months after she left office. Under her leadership, DOJ was caught systematically removing documents mentioning Trump from Epstein file releases. Deputy AG Todd Blanche, Trump's personal criminal defense attorney, personally conducted two days of interviews with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell but failed to ask about emails where Epstein claimed Trump was "at the house with a victim for many hours." Blanche also owned $159,000 or more in cryptocurrency while shutting down DOJ crypto investigations.

The American military swears an oath to the Constitution, not to any individual. This distinction has been a defining feature of the republic since its founding. Trump selected Pete Hegseth — a Fox News host with no Pentagon or defense policy experience — to lead the world's most powerful military. The consequences have been immediate and severe: an unauthorized war with Iran that has killed 7 US troops and more than 1,200 Iranian civilians including children at a girls' school, $93 billion in Pentagon spending in a single month, and a purge of senior military leadership including orders to cut four-star generals by 20% and the firing of the first women to lead the Navy and Coast Guard.

Intelligence agencies operate largely in secret, which makes their independence from political interference even more critical than other government institutions. When intelligence is politicized, threats go undetected, allies lose trust, and national security decisions are made based on what the president wants to hear rather than what is actually happening. Trump has installed two loyalists whose records suggest they will do exactly that.

DNI Tulsi Gabbard took a secret trip to meet Assad in 2017, repeatedly amplified Russian talking points about Ukraine, and promoted debunked claims about U.S. bioweapons labs in Ukraine. A 2026 whistleblower complaint alleges she bypassed normal NSA distribution channels on an intercept about Jared Kushner's influence on Trump regarding Iran, directing NSA to route classified details only to herself. The suppressed intelligence about Kushner's foreign influence on Iran policy was hidden before the US went to war with Iran. CIA Director John Ratcliffe, as former DNI, released classified intelligence in ways that benefited Trump politically and contradicted intelligence community assessments that Russia favored Trump in 2020.

Appointing someone to lead an agency who fundamentally opposes the agency's mission is a deliberate strategy for dismantling it from within. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. built his career attacking vaccine safety despite overwhelming scientific consensus. He has no medical degree and no public health training. As HHS Secretary, he fired all 17 members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and stripped 6 of 17 childhood vaccines from universal recommendation, including rotavirus, meningitis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, flu, and COVID. Trump's DOJ argued in court that RFK Jr. alone decides "what public health proof is within HHS purview."

The Federal Reserve has operated independently from political control for 111 years. No president has ever successfully removed a Fed Chair before their term ended. This independence is not a tradition — it is a legal requirement: the Federal Reserve Act provides that the Chair can only be removed "for cause." Trump has repeatedly called for removing Jerome Powell over interest rate decisions, and nominated Kevin Warsh as replacement. Hours after Warsh's nomination was announced, his name appeared in the 2026 Epstein file releases — on a 2010 email list labeled "St. Barth's Christmas 2010" forwarded to Epstein.

Three former Federal Reserve Chairs — Janet Yellen, Ben Bernanke, and Alan Greenspan — issued a joint statement calling the criminal inquiry into Powell "an unprecedented attempt to use prosecutorial attacks to undermine that independence," comparing it to monetary policy in "emerging markets with weak institutions."

Russell Vought is arguably the most consequential and least visible loyalist appointment. As OMB Director, he controls the flow of money to every federal agency. He is also the chief architect of Project 2025 — the 920-page Heritage Foundation blueprint for restructuring the federal government around executive power. Court records revealed that "DOGE is underneath the OMB," meaning Vought has been guiding the cuts that have hollowed out federal agencies.

Installing loyalists is not an end in itself — it is the mechanism that transforms government from a system of checks and balances into an instrument of personal power. With loyalists controlling the FBI, DOJ, and intelligence agencies, government power can be deployed against political enemies without institutional resistance. Career agents would refuse illegal orders; loyalists comply. Career lawyers would object to pretextual prosecutions; loyalists enable them. Career intelligence analysts would report threats objectively; loyalists filter intelligence to serve the president's narrative.
