Free, fair elections are the lifeblood of our democracy. Charges of unfairness are serious. But calling an election unfair does not make it so.
— U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, dismissing Trump campaign election challenge, November 2020

After losing the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden, Donald Trump did not concede. Instead, he launched a multi-pronged effort to overturn the results. The strategy included filing over 60 lawsuits, organizing fake slates of electors in seven states, pressuring Vice President Mike Pence to refuse certification, and ultimately directing a mob to the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The evidence for these actions comes not from political opponents but from Trump's own words, recorded phone calls, testimony from his own staff and appointees, and criminal indictments brought by a Republican-appointed special counsel. Trump's own Attorney General, William Barr, called the fraud claims "bullshit" under oath.

What follows is the documented record: what Trump said, what he did, how the legal system responded, and what experts concluded. Every claim is sourced from court documents, criminal indictments, witness testimony, and recordings.

How courts and the legal system responded to Trump's coup attempt

The legal response to Trump's coup attempt was extraordinary in its scope and its consistency. Across 60 lawsuits in state and federal courts, Trump and his allies failed to produce evidence of fraud sufficient to change a single state's outcome. Judges appointed by presidents of both parties, including eight Trump appointees, rejected these claims. The rulings were not close calls or technicalities; judges found that Trump's legal team presented no credible evidence.

Beyond the civil cases, criminal proceedings followed. Special Counsel Jack Smith brought four federal felony counts. A Georgia grand jury returned thirteen felony counts in a sprawling RICO indictment naming eighteen co-defendants. The House impeached Trump for a second time, with ten Republicans voting to impeach and seven Republican senators voting to convict.

The 2020 Bottom Line

Trump attempted a coup. When the voters rejected him, when state officials refused to change results, when courts threw out his cases, when his own Vice President refused to go along — Trump incited a violent mob to attack the Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

He has been criminally indicted for these actions. The evidence is overwhelming. This is not opinion — this is documented fact.
